I have never been a person who knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. In fact, I still don’t. I like to think of myself as a work in progress. What I do know is that I am a person who needs a career. To me, it’s like a limb, like being able to breathe. Having a career is a part of my very fibre.
As Belinda Bow, I am a wife, I am a mother, but I choose to have a career too. The interesting thing, is that having a career is often judged by *gasp* other mums! I do not, have not and will not judge other mums on their parenting choices, whether they work or not, choose to grow vegetables or if they choose to do yoga on a Tuesday.
What I don’t understand is the judgement placed on mums who choose to work and be a parent. I believe that the roles are not mutually exclusive.
What I am most proud of is that when I developed Green Chilli Marketing, it was with the idea that I could have a career and be the primary carer for our children. My husband (Paul) and I talked about what we wanted from our lives and for our children. And it all came down to choice. By developing the business, we knew that maternity leave wouldn’t happen, nor would sick leave and holiday pay, but we also knew that this would be a trade-off to not have to “return to the workplace” and put our children in long-term day-care.
So I can almost hear you asking, “so was it worth it?”. It has been the most difficult, most wonderful, most rewarding, most stressful, most exciting journey of my life!
Being a parent is an incredible experience and because Paul and I made this choice I can take Fletcher to Gymberoo, Mackenzie has speech therapy and Gymnastics, plus park visits, playtime and basically I can make time to just hang- out with the kids. Don’t get me wrong, fitting in work around our family is crazy hard, but it has been the best decision I have ever made. There is lots of work that needs to be done at night and at odd times, but knowing that I have an incredible relationship with Mackenzie and Fletcher is so worth it.
I am so in love with our family of 4 and knowing that I can be Belinda – businesswoman one minute and Belinda – wife and mother the next is just awesome!
